Biden's Puppy: A Post-Election Gift From Jill — Vice President-elect Joe Biden picked out a German shepherd pup last weekend from a breeder near his Delaware home, according to a local newspaper report. Biden was reportedly promised the post-election dog by his wife, Jill, who would tape pictures of different dogs on the back of the seat in front of Biden on his campaign plane. RSS Feed Filter FeedrinseFeedrinse is a basic RSS feed filter that can be used to filter one or multiple feeds so that only selected articles will be included in the mashup. This could remind a few users of Yahoo Pipes. The service provided by Feedrinse is however basic in comparison to that of Yahoo Pipes. A user of Feedrinse may add up to 500 feeds to the service and group those feeds in different channels. He can do so by adding them manually in a web form or importing a opml file that contains a list of feeds. The filters can then be...

How to fix Yahoo [Blogging For Dollars]Om Malik has some brash advice for Yahoo. Too bad no one will find it: Three different publications' logos clog the top of his article's page. The lead paragraph is disrupted with another promo link, a broken stock ticker link, and a blogroll for Kara Swisher, whose name really ought to link to Google Finance to disclose her wife's current worth in GOOG shares. Second paragraph: "Yang's decision isn't a surprise ... In June 2008, I wrote about ..." Om, I know you love it when we pick on each other, so here you go: Start your friggin' article already....

Yahoo Mass Firings December 10, Still Too FewYahoo will drop the axe on December 10, Kara Swisher says. The company is still reportedly planning to can about 1,500 Yahoos. A cut of that size would only roll the company's workforce back to Q2 levels, and, in our opinion, it would leave Yahoo in a position where it might have to make further cuts next year. This is not the way to set the company up for a clean, fresh start. In better news, Yahoo and AOL are reportedly far apart on price in their merger negotiations: AOL's at $6 billion, Yahoo's at $3 billion. Given how little...

US election coverage - who’s making the most of the web?Elections bring out the best in online journalism. News organisations have plenty of time to plan, there’s a global audience up for grabs, and the material lends itself to interactive treatment (voter opinions; candidates’ stances on various issues; statistics and databases; constant updates; personalisation). Not only that, but the electorate is using the internet for election news more than any other medium apart from television (and here are some reasons why). PaidContent has a good roundup of various UK editors’ views, and decides blogs, Twitter and data are the themes (more specifically, liveblogging and mapping). Choice picks include the Telegraph teaming...

Yahoo tool helps Web programmers shrink images Yahoo Smush It finds Web site images that can be put on a diet.(Credit: CNET News) Yahoo, which has considerable expertise in maximizing Web site performance, has long offered advice on how to speed up sites up by minimizing photo size. Now it's released a tool to help Web programmers automate the process. Popular Stories Widgets - Great for Visitors and Surprisingly Valuable for SEO, TooPosted by randfishIt should come as no surprise that having a widget or sidebar element on a news, blog or articles website is great for traffic and page views. Online outlets have been using them to boost readership, email-a-friend features and page views per session counts for years. But, did you know that they're also great for SEO? Let's take a look at some examples, and investigate the myriad of benefits "most popular" sections provide: Slate.com Slate's most popular widget isn't the best designed or most fully featured, but it provides the basic concept - display a list of stories...

As Web technologies evolve, new, innovative ways to absorb information via the Web browser are being created. Some, like Google Reader, and blogs on SportsBlogs Nation are utilizing keyboard navigation, letting you type letters to jump from one new item to the next, while others let you move between screens by using the arrow keys, instead of clicking the mouse. An enterprising developer, Michael Buchanan, is hoping that nested GUIs, which he calls "Microspaces", will be a new way to approach navigation - letting you view a page within a page, within a page, all without opening a new browser...
