Panasonic & Best Buy Really Want To Sell You A 3-D TV

Okay, so Avatar was a big blue dud at the Oscars last night. But that still doesn't change the fact that the 3-D spectacle has made more money than some small countries. And with Alice In Wonderland raking in over $100 million in its opening weekend, the U.S. movie audience has shown it's willing to embrace 3-D. That's why Panasonic has teamed up with Best Buy to push its new line of 3-D TVs.

Panasonic has some hefty competition in the 3-D TV market from the likes of Samsung, Sony and LG, so it's made a deal with Best Buy to set up demonstration areas to show off their products in the retail giant's stores. According to reports, the initial launch will be in 300 Best Buys, increasing to 1,000 stores by year's end.

Panasonic hopes to sell approximately 500,000 3-D TVs in the U.S. in 2010. They are expected to price their 50" 3-D unit at around $2,500, which is more than double the current cost of their same size 2-D screen.

What do you think about 3-D? Is it the future of home theater? How much would you be willing to spend on a 3-D TV?

Sony Reveals BDP-S470 and BDP-S570 3D Blu-ray players

Sony has announced a pair of 3D Blu-ray players which combine with the various 3DTVs making it to market in 2010 to deliver movie content in three dimensions to your living room.?There's the?BDP-S470 and the BDP-S570.

The two models both offer DLNA functionality, upscaling of any standard-definition DVDs that you put in, and all the BD-Live functionality you can shake a stick at. Then, when you put in a 3D Blu-ray, which should be available later this year, and put on some active shutter glasses, you'll get the full experience.

There's also access to Sony's Bravia Internet Video platform, which offers on-demand content from a range of web services. The BDP-S570 has Wi-Fi built in, along with noise reduction tech, but in most other ways the two players are pretty much identical. There's no pricing or availability info just yet, but as soon as we hear anything we'll let you know.

Fujitsu's LifeBook UH900 gets reviewed, notable flaws found
There's no question that Fujitsu's LifeBook UH900 is a niche device; much like Sony's VAIO P, there's just not a lot of demand for an expensive clamshell with an extremely high resolution and an exceptionally cramped keyboard. That said, there's a curious seduction surrounding this thing, and critics over at Pocketables seemed to agree. After spending some long days (and nights, don'tcha know?) with the Japanese version of this here device, they came away with a huge mixed bag of emotions. On one hand, the snappy performance and excellent portability made it difficult to put down, but the downright dreadful 2 - 2.5 hours of battery life more or less forced them to. There's also more gentle gripes about the screen color, the "toy-like" build quality and "useless multitouch." For us, that's probably one flaw too many to accept, but the forgiving among us should definitely check out the full skinny before making a final call.

LG's ultraslim X300 launching in Asia, Middle East and South America this month
An 11.6-inch display fit within a thickness of 17.5mm. Sure, we're mixing up our measurement systems, but whichever way you slice it, the X300 is one extremely thin device. LG has now announced that availability in the Asian, Middle Eastern and South American markets will be forthcoming this month, though all we know on the topic of price is that it'll "vary country-by-country." With up to 2GB of RAM, integrated 3G, and a 128GB SSD option on tap, we'll even forgive the inclusion of a 2GHz Menlow CPU that places the X300 closer to Sony's VAIO X than the Core 2 Duo-driven MacBook Air that it aspires to be associated with. Check out our hands-on pics over here while we wait, hope and pray for a release on more familiar shores.

[Thanks, Sascha]

VU Meter Hack Turns PSP Into Something Functional [Mods]

This mod turns the PSP into a pretty cool looking little VU Meter (that's volume meter, to you non-audiophiles). So dust of that PSP kiddo, it's time to breathe life into that fledgling portable once again!

The hack is the work of "foo foo" and it works as advertised. Spin up an audio track, and watch the little lights pump up in down with the levels.

It's no Korg DS-10, but then again few things are. At the very least this hack would provide you with literally minutes of fun as you wait for Sony to get its act together and release the mythical PSPad, PSP Phone, or whatever it ends up being. [Foo foo via Engadget]
